Latin American neo-Pentecostal prophetic / healing high-control movements (umbrella)

Umbrella entry covering a documented pattern of high-control neo-Pentecostal prophetic and healing movements within Latin American Christianity, primarily concentrated in Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, and Argentina, and documented in sustained Brazilian press coverage, in Brazilian criminal and regulatory proceedings against multiple named figures, and in academic work on Brazilian Pentecostalism. Several specific named ministries within this pattern are profiled separately in the catalogue. This umbrella covers the pattern at the genre level; it does NOT generalise to the broader diversity of Latin American Christianity.

Christian

Miles Jesu (Vatican-suppressed Catholic ecclesial institute)

Catholic ecclesial institute founded 1964 by Father Alfonso María Durán Ariza (1922-2009). Approximately 200 members at peak across multiple countries. Suppressed by the Vatican in 2007 following an apostolic visitation that documented cult-like coercive-control practices; founder Durán removed from leadership and ordered to a life of prayer and penance. Smaller but well-documented case in the Catholic ecclesial-movement-as-cult research literature.

New Religious Movement

Escuela de Yoga de Buenos Aires / Buenos Aires Yoga School

Escuela de Yoga de Buenos Aires (EYBA), a Buenos Aires self-help and philosophy organization founded in 1983 by accountant Juan Percowicz, was dismantled in August 2022 after roughly 50 police raids following a former member's complaint; Argentine prosecutors allege it operated a pyramidal 'Geishado' system that sexually exploited female members for the benefit of wealthy and powerful clients, alongside forced psychiatric sedation, asset stripping and money laundering, and 17 defendants remain formally indicted as of this review. The organization's legal personhood was dissolved in February 2023, but the criminal case itself has swung between advancing toward oral trial and, at one point, being blocked from trial altogether by Argentina's highest criminal court — and a near-identical 1990s prosecution of the same founder on similar allegations closed decades earlier without a single conviction.

New Religious Movement

New Acropolis

New Acropolis is an international esoteric-philosophy organisation founded in Buenos Aires in 1957 by Jorge Ángel Livraga Rizzi, teaching a curriculum of comparative philosophy in the Theosophical lineage through local schools in dozens of countries. Its public face is that of a cultural association — philosophy courses, volunteering, arts events. Its contested face comes from the 1980s–1990s European cult debates: the organisation appeared on the 1995 French parliamentary report's list of movements, Belgian and other inquiries examined it, and ex-member and watchdog accounts describe hierarchical discipline, uniformed ceremonial, loyalty structures, and an internal culture considerably more demanding than the evening-class exterior suggests. The organisation firmly denies sectarian characterisations. The profile scores the documented middle ground at low confidence.
