New Religious Movement

Centrepoint Community (Bert Potter, New Zealand, historical)

Personal-growth commune (1977–2000) at Albany on Auckland's North Shore, New Zealand. Founded by Herbert 'Bert' Potter (1925–2012) on a Werner-Erhard-EST + sexual-revolution + drug-experimentation foundation. Multiple criminal convictions (Potter 1990, 1992; multiple lieutenants) for systemic sexual abuse of minors and drug supply. The canonical Australasian historical case in the cult-studies literature.

Christian

Gloriavale Christian Community (New Zealand)

Isolated Christian community of ≈600 in Haupiri, West Coast, New Zealand. Founded 1969 by Hopeful Christian (Neville Cooper). Multiple 2022–24 NZ Employment Court rulings have found that members were illegally treated as unpaid labour from age 6, awarding back-wages.

Christian

Plymouth Brethren Christian Church / Exclusive Brethren

Strict separatist branch of the Plymouth Brethren movement, currently led by Bruce D Hales from Sydney. The doctrine of 'separation' enforces severe shunning of those who leave or are excommunicated, including by family.

Hindu

Science of Identity Foundation / Chris Butler

Hawaii-based offshoot of the Krishna-consciousness tradition led by Chris Butler ('Jagad Guru Siddhaswarupananda'), operating through low-visibility satsang networks, schools, and political engagement rather than temples. Ex-members — several now public figures' critics — describe absolute guru veneration, purity rules, homophobic teaching, and children raised under total deference to Butler. Coverage expanded after adherent-raised politician Tulsi Gabbard's campaigns drew scrutiny to the network.

Christian

Destiny Church / Brian Tamaki

Auckland-based Pentecostal church founded by Brian and Hannah Tamaki (1998), combining prosperity teaching, male loyalty structures, and political activism. New Zealand journalism and academic observers document heavy tithing expectations, oath-taking rituals to Tamaki as 'spiritual father', and member mobilisation into protests — including a 2025 drag-storytime disruption that produced criminal charges. Many members describe genuine welfare support; the score reflects documented control patterns, not members' sincerity.

Wellness / Multi-Level

Scentsy (home fragrance MLM)

Home-fragrance wax-warmer MLM (founded 2004). Standard MLM patterns; less aggressive than Amway / Herbalife.

Christian

Rātana Church (Māori Christian mainstream)

Māori Christian church founded by T.W. Rātana (1925). Substantial role in NZ Labour Party politics through Rātana–Labour alliance.

Other

Māori Indigenous spirituality (mainstream)

Māori Indigenous spiritual traditions of Aotearoa / New Zealand. Distinctive iwi-based traditions across many tribes.

Other

Academic cult-recovery research community (mainstream)

Mainstream academic cult-recovery research community — ICSA, INFORM (LSE), CESNUR, plus various university-based research programmes.
