Apostate
Loaded term used by many high-control groups for ex-members who publicly speak out — designed to discredit testimony in advance.
How it looks in practice
The 'apostate' framing tells current members that any ex-member's negative account is the lie of a fallen sinner / bitter ex-member / agent of darkness, so the testimony can be dismissed without engaging its content. JW members are formally taught that 'apostate' material is spiritually dangerous and should not be read; many other high-control groups have functionally identical practices.
BITE-model connection
Thought control plus emotional control — discredits external information sources (apostate testimony) and weaponises group identity (you don't want to be like them). Among the most reliable BITE-pattern indicators across religious traditions, also seen in some MLM and online-cult contexts.
