Milieu Control
Lifton's term for the regulation of all communication within a group — what is said, by whom, on what topics.
How it looks in practice
Milieu control is the FLDS community at Hildale where members had no internet, no television, no non-FLDS books, no contact with non-FLDS family, and all sermons / news / interpretation flowed through Warren Jeffs's revelations. The 'milieu' is the entire information environment, and the group controls it.
BITE-model connection
Information control. The first of Lifton's eight criteria, and the most basic form of cult information control. Profiles with strong evidence of milieu control automatically derive the 'milieu_control' Lifton-criterion badge in the CLCI Hub auto-detection.
