Totalism
Lifton's term for environments that seek total control over members' inner and outer life.
How it looks in practice
Totalism shows up where group regulation extends from religious doctrine to dress, food, work, marriage, residence, education, leisure reading, social contact, and even private thought. The FLDS, Gloriavale, Twelve Tribes Communities, and the Hare Krishna gurukula system are paradigm totalist environments per Lifton's criteria.
BITE-model connection
Totalist environments tend to score 7-10 on all four BITE axes simultaneously, producing CLCI totals in the 28-40 (High-to-Extreme) band. Lifton's eight thought-reform criteria are the qualitative texture of the totalist environment; BITE is the structural breakdown.
