Profile facts
In context
Harbhajan Singh Puri (26 August 1929 – 6 October 2004), later known to followers as Yogi Bhajan and Siri Singh Sahib, emigrated from India via Canada to Los Angeles and in 1969 founded the Healthy, Happy, Holy Organization (3HO) to teach a form of Kundalini yoga he presented as authoritative Sikh practice; he incorporated Sikh Dharma International as a California religious nonprofit and, through the "corporation sole" Siri Singh Sahib of Sikh Dharma, personally controlled 3HO's affiliated legal entities until his death. Mainstream Sikh authorities repeatedly repudiated him during his lifetime and this catalogue treats 3HO/Kundalini Yoga as organisationally and doctrinally distinct from mainstream Sikhism on that basis: in 1977 the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee's former president denied he held any authority to lead Sikhism in the West or that the SGPC had granted him the "Siri Singh Sahib" title, and a Sikh high-priest council in India separately condemned his yoga and "sexual practices" teachings as "forbidden and immoral." 3HO also built a substantial corporate web under Sikh Dharma-linked entities: Peace Cereal (Golden Temple of Oregon's cereal division, sold to Hearthside Food Solutions for $71 million in May 2010; Yogi Tea was retained separately under the renamed East West Tea Company) and Akal Security, a roughly $500-million-a-year federal-contract security firm donated to the church by its founders in 1980.
Bhajan died in 2004; a multi-year court battle followed among his widow, children and the surviving corporate leadership over control of Sikh Dharma International, Unto Infinity LLC and the Siri Singh Sahib Corporation (SSSC), ultimately dismissed in April 2018 by a US District Court that found the entities too religious in character for civil adjudication. In January 2020 Bhajan's former secretary Pamela Saharah Dyson ("Premka") published the memoir Premka: White Bird in a Golden Cage, alleging sexual, financial and emotional abuse; the disclosures prompted a Los Angeles civil suit and led the SSSC itself to commission the independent group An Olive Branch to investigate. An Olive Branch's August 2020 report found it "more likely than not" that Bhajan raped three women, injured eight during sex, engaged in nonconsensual touching of nine people, and used compartmentalisation, quid pro quo and threats to control students — while also finding that claims of his celibacy were inaccurate. The report credited his supporters' prior denials as sincere belief rather than deliberate falsehood.
