The boogaloo movement coalesced online from the mid-2010s, developing out of 4chan and related imageboard communities that adopted 'boogaloo' -- a reference to the film Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo -- as ironic shorthand for a second American civil war. It has no formal leadership, membership rolls, or organisational hierarchy; adherents share a meme vocabulary and are often identifiable at armed protests by Hawaiian shirts worn with tactical gear. The Southern Poverty Law Center and the Network Contagion Research Institute describe the movement's politics as heterogeneous, spanning anti-government libertarianism and gun-rights activism to explicitly white-supremacist and accelerationist strains, and note that many adherents had already been radicalised in earlier militia movements, including the Three Percenters, before adopting boogaloo iconography.
Federal prosecutors have linked the movement to multiple killings and prosecuted attacks in 2020. Active-duty US Air Force Sergeant Steven Carrillo shot and killed a Federal Protective Service officer, David Patrick Underwood, outside a federal building in Oakland, California on May 29, 2020, and killed a Santa Cruz County sheriff's deputy on June 6 while evading arrest; the FBI said Carrillo and an accomplice used the George Floyd protests as cover to attack police, and investigators found a boogaloo-symbol patch and vest, plus boogaloo slogans written in blood, on a vehicle linked to the attacks. Carrillo pleaded guilty to federal charges for the Underwood killing and was sentenced to 41 years in prison in June 2022; he also pleaded guilty to state murder charges for Gutzwiller's killing and was sentenced on August 26, 2022 to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Texas man Ivan Harrison Hunter fired an assault rifle into Minneapolis's Third Precinct building during the Floyd protests; in a text exchange that, per the federal indictment, occurred a few hours after Carrillo had already murdered Underwood, Hunter told Carrillo to go for police buildings and Carrillo replied I did better lol; Hunter was sentenced to four years. Separately, self-identified boogaloo adherents Michael Solomon and Benjamin Teeter were arrested in September 2020 after offering weapons support to people they believed were affiliated with Hamas -- an FBI sting -- while discussing a plan to bomb a Twin Cities courthouse; both pleaded guilty to federal terrorism-related charges. Texas livestreamer Aaron Swenson was convicted of attempted murder of a police officer and sentenced to 50 years. At least five deaths have been publicly linked to boogaloo-associated violence in 2020. The movement remains active mainly as an online subculture, with reduced public visibility since the 2020 prosecutions.
