In context
Christian Identity is not a single church but a loosely networked racist theology — a composite entry covering multiple independent congregations, compounds, and prison ministries that share a doctrinal core rather than a common organisational structure. It descends from 19th-century British Israelism, itself a non-racist belief that Anglo-Saxons descended from the "lost tribes" of Israel; American adherents reworked this from the 1920s onward into an explicitly racial doctrine. Wesley Swift, regarded as the movement's father, built the Church of Jesus Christ–Christian in California through the 1940s–50s, teaching a "two-seed" or "dual-seedline" theology: that white Europeans are the true, literal descendants of Israel; that Jewish people descend from Satan through a "serpent seed" corruption of Eve; and that non-white peoples are soulless "pre-Adamic" beings incapable of salvation. After Swift's 1971 death, Richard Butler took control, renamed the church Aryan Nations, and relocated it to a fortified compound at Hayden Lake, Idaho, which became a recruitment and training hub through the 1980s.
The theology has repeatedly furnished the ideological scaffolding for organised violence rather than functioning as ordinary congregational religion. Aryan Nations alumni formed The Order (Brüder Schweigen) in 1983–84, robbing armoured cars and murdering Denver radio host Alan Berg in 1984; leader Robert Mathews died in an FBI siege, and surviving members received lengthy federal racketeering and murder sentences. The Covenant, the Sword, and the Arm of the Lord, an Identity-aligned paramilitary compound in the Arkansas Ozarks, stockpiled weapons and cyanide before its 1985 surrender to the FBI. Eric Rudolph — convicted of the 1996 Atlanta Olympic bombing and later abortion-clinic and gay-nightclub bombings — was steeped in Christian Identity teaching via the Army of God milieu; he pleaded guilty in 2005 to avoid the death penalty and is serving multiple life terms. The ADL and SPLC both track Christian Identity as a hate ideology rather than a single group, with SPLC's hate-group roster including Aryan Nations splinters and prison-based Identity ministries. The movement's organisational peak passed with Aryan Nations' 2000 bankruptcy — following a civil judgment for a security guard's beating — and Butler's 2004 death; adherents today are dispersed across small congregations, online forums, and individual prison converts rather than a single compound.
