Christian

Good News International Ministries / Paul Nthenge Mackenzie

Kenyan apocalyptic sect led by Paul Nthenge Mackenzie, a former taxi driver turned televangelist. Members were told to starve themselves and their children to 'meet Jesus'; exhumations at Shakahola Forest from April 2023 recovered over 400 bodies. Mackenzie and co-defendants face murder, manslaughter, terrorism and child-torture charges; a Kenyan commission of inquiry documented the group's mechanics.

Christian

Kenyan Christian doomsday cults (umbrella, Mackenzie tragedy)

Umbrella entry for Kenyan Christian doomsday cults; the centrepiece is Paul Mackenzie's Good News International Ministry, whose 2023 Shakahola Forest fast-to-death produced at least 429 confirmed exhumed bodies — the largest cult mass-death event in modern African history and one of the deadliest globally since Jonestown (1978).

Christian

Sub-Saharan African prophetic / apostolic high-control churches (umbrella)

Umbrella entry covering a documented pattern of high-control prophetic and apostolic ministries within Sub-Saharan African Christianity, primarily concentrated in Nigeria, South Africa, Zimbabwe, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Kenya, and documented in the South African CRL Rights Commission 2015–2017 reports on the 'commercialisation of religion and abuse of people's belief systems' alongside sustained African and international press coverage. Several specific named ministries within this pattern are profiled separately in the catalogue. This umbrella covers the pattern at the genre level; it does NOT generalise to the broader diversity of African Christianity.

Christian

Jesus Christians (Dave McKay)

Small active communal-living Christian movement founded in 1981 by Dave McKay (an Australian-born ex-Children of God / Family International member) and his wife Cherry. The movement operates as a sequence of small communal households across Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States, India, and Kenya, organising around a literal-discipleship interpretation of Christian texts. The movement is internationally known for its members' documented practice of voluntary kidney donations to strangers as an expression of that literal-discipleship framework. Documented in sustained BBC and Sydney Morning Herald long-running coverage and in documentary work.

Christian

Kenyan high-control church umbrella (beyond Mackenzie)

Umbrella for other documented Kenyan high-control churches beyond Paul Mackenzie's Good News International. Kenya has seen multiple high-control church crises.

Christian

Legio Maria (Legio Maria Church of Africa Mission)

Legio Maria is a large, long-established African Initiated Church founded in Kenya's Nyanza region in 1962-63 by Simeo Ondeto, Gaudencia Aoko and a woman styled 'Mama Maria' after breaking from the Catholic Church. Formally registered in 1966 with government estimates of roughly 90,000 followers, it grew into one of Africa's largest African-initiated churches, spreading across East and Central Africa. Members venerate founder Simeo Ondeto (d. 1991) as an incarnation of Jesus ('Baba Messiah'). A 2009 succession schism between rival 'Pope' claimants has produced over a decade of litigation and periodic factional violence, and academic ethnography documents a communal physical-discipline practice ('chwat') for speech judged spiritually false — together the core of a comparatively narrow adverse record for a movement of this scale and longevity.

Christian

GAFCON (Global Anglican Future Conference)

Conservative Anglican alliance (founded 2008) of provinces opposing LGBT+ inclusion. Substantial Global South membership including Nigerian Anglican Church.

Christian

Quakers (Religious Society of Friends)

The Religious Society of Friends is one of the lowest-CLCI Christian traditions, with non-creedal worship, consensus decision-making, and a deep peace-and-justice tradition.
