Mackenzie founded Good News International in Malindi in 2003 and built an audience through his Times TV broadcasts, preaching against education, medicine, and vaccination as satanic. After announcing the end times, he relocated followers to a remote ranch in Shakahola Forest, organised into biblically named villages, where phones were surrendered, contact with relatives cut, and departure prevented by enforcers. From roughly January 2023, members were instructed to fast to death in a set order — children first — and exhumations beginning April 2023 recovered more than 400 bodies, many showing starvation and asphyxiation. Autopsies indicated some victims, including children, were strangled or suffocated when they resisted. Mackenzie had twice been previously arrested over child-related offences and released. The case, among the worst cult-related death tolls since Jonestown, prompted a presidential commission of inquiry and proposed regulatory reform of religious organisations in Kenya.
