South Korean apocalyptic Christian movement founded 1984 in Anyang by Lee Man-hee (born 1931). Approximately 300,000 baptised members and millions of associated 'Bible students' globally. Centred on Lee's claim to be the 'promised pastor' who uniquely interprets the Book of Revelation. Globally notorious after the February 2020 Daegu COVID-19 super-spreader event that produced South Korea's first major outbreak. Lee convicted 2020 of obstruction of disease-control investigations; acquitted of embezzlement charges on appeal 2021.

Korean-origin global new religious movement founded in 1954 in Seoul by Sun Myung Moon (1920–2012). Distinctive doctrines include Moon as 'True Father' completing Jesus's incomplete mission, mass arranged 'Blessing' weddings of strangers (4,000+ at first big event in 1982 at Madison Square Garden), and intensive 'Heavenly Tribute' financial extraction. Approximately 1–3 million members at peak (1980s); ~100,000–300,000 today. Daughter Hak Ja Han leads since Moon's 2012 death; son Hyung Jin 'Sean' Moon leads breakaway Rod of Iron Sanctuary Church. Sokushinbutsu / Shingon mountain ascetic self-mummification (historical)

Sokushinbutsu (即身仏 — 'Buddha in this very body') refers to the historical Japanese Esoteric Shingon mountain-ascetic practice of self-mummification through a multi-year extreme-dietary regimen culminating in living entombment, practised between roughly 1000 and 1879 CE primarily at Mount Yudono and adjacent Dewa Sanzan temple complex in Yamagata Prefecture. Approximately 24 confirmed sokushinbutsu mummies survive in Japanese temple display. The Meiji government formally outlawed the practice in 1879. The entry is a historical reference for extreme-religious-asceticism BITE-pattern analysis; the practice is no longer performed.

Pana-Wave Laboratory (Yuko Chino)

Pana-Wave Laboratory (パナウェーブ研究所) was a Japanese millenarian new religious movement founded ~1977 by Yuko Chino (千乃裕子, 1934–2006), notable for the May 2003 nationwide Japanese mass-panic incident in which the group's white-clad, white-vehicle convoy traversed central Honshu pursuing what Chino prophesied as the only safe location to escape an electromagnetic-attack apocalypse. Chino's apocalypse predictions failed (May 15 2003 deadline passed without incident); she continued teaching until her 2006 death. Members continued under successor leadership at substantially reduced scale. The case is a canonical example of contained-millenarian-cult mass-panic in modern Japanese NRM scholarship.

Active intensive-seminar network founded in 1986 by Harry Palmer (a former Scientology mission holder) and operated through Star's Edge International from Altamonte Springs, Florida. The Avatar Course is delivered as a sequence of multi-day residential intensive seminars (the Avatar Course, the Masters Course, the Wizards Course, the Avatar Professional course) under a Scientology-derived 'tech' adapted into a non-Scientology commercial format. Documented in academic Large Group Awareness Training (LGAT) literature, in sustained mainstream press, and in long-running ex-participant testimony archives.

Joyu — Aum's media spokesperson during the 1995 Tokyo subway sarin attack period and Asahara's designated successor in the late 1990s — explicitly renounced Asahara veneration in 2007 and reframed Aum's doctrine in deliberately moderated terms. Approximately 200 members across Japan as of 2024; remains under ongoing Public Security Intelligence Agency (PSIA) monitoring under Japan's 1999 Group Regulation Law along with Aleph and Aleph successor 'Circle of Rainbow Light'.

Ex-member and press accounts document heavy donation seminars and family strain around the movement's exclusivity; Okawa died in 2023, leaving succession contested.

Ho No Hana Sanpogyo (foot-reading cult)

Ho No Hana Sanpogyo, founded in Shizuoka in 1987 by Hōgen Fukunaga, became Japan's canonical 'fee-for-fear' religion: Fukunaga claimed to diagnose illness and karmic peril by examining the soles of clients' feet, then pressed those diagnosed — often told they faced cancer or family catastrophe — into training seminars and donations that could run to millions of yen. Civil suits by hundreds of former members in the late 1990s exposed the sales scripts behind the readings; police raided the organisation in 2000, and Fukunaga was arrested and ultimately convicted of large-scale fraud, receiving a 12-year prison sentence upheld on appeal. The organisation collapsed to a remnant. The case is a standard reference in Japanese consumer-protection law on 'spiritual sales' (reikan shōhō).

Yamagishi-kai (Yamagishism)

Yamagishi-kai — the Yamagishi Association, from founder Miyozo Yamagishi's 1953 movement — became Japan's largest secular-communal experiment: a network of agricultural communities (jikkenchi, 'demonstration sites') whose members surrender all personal property on joining, work without wages in the movement's substantial farming and dairy enterprises, and traditionally raised children communally, in boarding arrangements apart from their parents. Entry runs through the movement's famous week-long Tokkōchō ('special course') seminar — an intensive group-dynamics process dissolving participants' attachment to possessions and anger, described by sympathisers as transformative and by Japanese critics and courts as psychologically coercive. At its 1990s peak the movement counted thousands of communal residents and one of Japan's best-known organic food brands; ex-member lawsuits over surrendered assets (which Japanese courts ordered partially returned), criticism of the children's separation and schooling, and generational attrition have since reduced it substantially. It continues today at diminished scale.

Fuji Taisekiji Kenshōkai

Fuji Taisekiji Kenshōkai is a Japanese Nichiren lay movement — expelled from the Nichiren Shōshū orbit in 1974 under Asai Shōei's leadership — that claims membership in the millions and is known in Japan principally for two things: an uncompromising exclusivist doctrine holding that only its own practice of Nichiren's Buddhism can save Japan from divine punishment (with nationalist accents around the Ise question that drove its expulsion), and an intense recruitment culture — persistent shakubuku proselytising heavily targeting students and young workers — that has made it a recurring subject of Japanese campus cautions and media coverage. Ex-member and family accounts describe pressure recruitment through friendship networks and escalating meeting demands; the organisation presents itself as a lawful lay religious body, which it is. Scored in the moderate band at low confidence, reflecting a documented pattern with limited independent English-language sourcing.

Tenshō Kōtai Jingūkyō (the 'dancing religion')

Tenshō Kōtai Jingūkyō — known worldwide as the 'dancing religion' (odoru shūkyō) — was founded in 1945 in Yamaguchi Prefecture by Kitamura Sayo, a farmer's wife whose blunt, electrifying preaching proclaimed that the universal deity had taken residence in her body. Revered by followers as Ōgamisama, she taught the muga no mai ('dance of no-self'), an ecstatic practice of egoless movement, denounced politicians and priests alike as 'maggot beggars', and built an international following through post-war missionary tours, particularly in Hawai'i and among Japanese diaspora communities. Leadership passed on her death in 1967 to her granddaughter. The movement's documented record is notably benign — open practice, modest demands, no extraction scandals — and it is scored accordingly as a comparator at the spectrum's lower band.

Agon Shū (Agonshū / Agon Shu)

Agon Shū is a Japanese new religious movement founded by Kiriyama Seiyū (1921-2016), organised around the Āgamas, an early Buddhist scriptural collection Kiriyama presented as the authentic key to the Buddha's original teaching. Best known internationally for its large annual Hoshi Matsuri fire ritual, the movement drew scholarly criticism of ritual commercialisation and, in past decades, apocalyptic messaging. Kiriyama's death on 29 August 2016 was not publicly announced until roughly mid-September; his successors subsequently proclaimed he has no successor and continues to lead the movement from the 'spirit world', a posthumous founder-veneration transformation documented in detail by Erica Baffelli and Ian Reader's 2019 academic study. No consumer-affairs actions, lawsuits, or ex-member harm record were located in verification. Asahara Shōkō, later the founder of Aum Shinrikyo, was an Agon Shū member before founding his own movement — a biographical fact this entry states without implying any connection between the two organisations' conduct.
